This timer controls the sequence and duration of your appliance's cycles by routing power to each function in order. A worn timer can cause cycles to stall or repeat; replacing it restores proper, reliable cycle advancement.

  • Advances the appliance through programmed stages by opening and closing internal contacts
  • Coordinates operations in the correct order
  • Common symptoms include cycles that won't advance, stop mid-cycle, or run unusually long/short
  • Requires manual advancing of the knob to finish a cycle when failing
What's included: One timer assembly. Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; shut off water supply if the appliance uses water
  • Access the control panel; note or photograph wire positions before removal
  • Transfer any mounting hardware and the knob/shaft components from the original timer as required
  • Reassemble and run a test cycle to ensure proper advancement

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Timer (Part Number: OEM18049695)

Jason, it would be recommended that the temperature switch WPW10248240 is tested for 120VAC (when set to cold or warm wash) at the violet wire found at terminal J2 while the unit is set in a normal cycle. If there is not voltage, the timer WPW10187167 has failed. If there is 120VAC, the next step would be testing the yellow wire with a red stripe for 120VAC. If there is not voltage, the switch would need to be replaced. If there is voltage but water does not go into the tub, the valve WPW10175893 has failed.

Tad for Model Number 110.29832801

The washing machine will fill with water and then stop. The agitation cycle does not start up, so the washing then continues to fill with water. I just replaced the switch that reads the pressure and it did not fix the issue. Could it be the timer? I tried to advance the switch to other parts of the cycle and nothing happens. I also took the motor off and then inspected the Main Drive motor switch and opened up the cover to find some burn marks. Seemed like things were making contacts. I cleaned the contacts with some light grit sandpaper and put it back together, but continue to have the issue. Any suggestions before I order a ton of parts to troubleshoot? Thanks!

Tad, if the water level does not fill to the proper level within a few minutes, there would likely be an issue with the valve WPW10175893. However, if the water does not rise at all, the drain hose would need to be checked to see if it has settled into the standpipe more than 6-8" as this can cause a siphoning issue. In regards to the motor having burn marks, it is possible that there may be an issue occurring in the area of the burns and the process of elimination would be necessary. Once the fill issue has been identified, the next step would be to move the timer WPW10187167 to an agitation portion of the cycle and test for 120VAC at the blue wire at pin 36. If there is 120VAC, the next step would be to visually inspect the motor capacitor WP8572717 to identify if it has any indicators of failing. If not, the likely failure would be the motor WP661600.

Dan for Model Number Not sure but paired dryer is 110.76912692

Lately my wife is finding that after a completed cycle there is still (clean) water in the bin with the clothes. If she tries to turn the control back around to the start of the last spin cycle she can sometimes get it to go through with the last part of the cycle including draining. Do you think replacement of the timer/control is likely called for? It doesn't seem mechanical because it sometimes does exactly what it is supposed to do and can often be made to complete the full cycle when it doesn't. Unit is probably 20 years old but wife prefers repair attempts because of all the stories about new washing machines being harder to repair, more likely to break down. I gave the washer model because all the grime or wear is making no number visible on the washer where I look. I could take apart further to see if I can find the number but figured the problem description and the paired dryer model number would suffice for now. Appreciate any wisdom. NeedHelp in Boston

Hello Dan, without the washer's model number, we can only give you a generic answer, but the spin/drain cycle is controlled by the timer.

Mike, With this happening on certain cycles then it does sound like the timer would be the issue with the unit.

Barbara, The most likely cause for the unit to spin on wash or fill on spin would be a faulty timer on the unit. You will want to check the knob to make sure that it is in place properly but if this checks ok then the timer would be the issue.

Richard, If the unit will not fill with water then it will not agitate. You will want to check to see if there is power getting to the water valve when you turn the unit on. If there is power to the valve and the water supply is turned on then the issue will be a faulty water valve. If there is no power to the valve then the timer would be likely.

Joe, Timers don't fail, that often, and the likelihood of it failing the sane as the previous timer is even more unlikely. First check and make sure the top of the drain pipe is high enough(39 -40 inches off the floor) check the water level switch and air tube for loose connections kinks twists, etc. then check the harness and switches in the remainder of the control panel components. If you need to repost a question, please include the model number of your product. Thanks

GA33, The first thing to check is the lower agitator WP8578209 to make sure it's not stripped on the shaft and the agitator cam assembly WP8537434 to make sure the "dogs" aren't damaged or stripped. If those all check OK, proper, then the problem is in the gearcase/transmission 3360629 .
