Walk into the kitchen on 21 Sep. Eight year old Frigidaire refrigerator appears to be short cycling, controls are nonfunctional. Unplug it for a few minutes, plug it back in, appears to return to normal function. Return to kitchen half hour 45 minutes later it's short cycling again. I determined that it was a problem that occurred during the defrost cycle by resetting the GFCI outlet and forwarding the defrost timer until the defroster came on. Once the defrosting began, the GFCI outlet would reliably trip. I took apart the shielding inside of the freezer and tested the defrosting without the heating element or the thermostat connected. My problem started with a rusting condition in the ice bin that spiraled out of hand. I took apart the ice bin and all the hardware thinking I could clean it with the suggested baking powder. Plastic parts cleaned up like new, metal parts were pitted. I wire brushed and sanded the parts put it all back together and gave it a try.
