Upon removal of the lower inspection panel on the front of the machine, my 20 year old son thought the motor was bad by the smell. But he did discover what turned out to be the belt tensioner pulley laying inside the machine. After he pronounced it dead, without a thought to the idler pulley, I looked at the machine and determined the lack of movement was due to the idler pulley having "fallen" off the shaft by looking at the illustrated parts break down provided on this website. I ordered all the parts necessary to replace the heating element and thermostat on a Sunday night. Appliance Parts Pros shipped on Monday AM and I received them on Wednesday. It took me 45 minutes to disassemble the dryer, replace the parts and have the dryer working again. It should be good for another 35 years which should cover me for my needs. First replaced the drum rollers...that wasn't it..took dryer back apart and spun the belt tension wheel by hand (should have done this the first time I took the dryer apart) and it squeaked. so I ordered the full parts: wheel, idler arm, idler spring, arm sleeve, E ring..Put it back together and whoa..no more squealing!! I removed the front panel of the dryer by removing 2 screws and lifting it up and out. Then I removed 4 screws from the bracket holding the tub in place. I had previously removed the 4 screws from the rear inspection cover so I reached in and released the spring loaded belt that turns the tub and then removed the idler pulley wheel. Our Maytag gas clothes dryer was not drying like it should/used to and was making a lot of noise. After researching online I figured the vent was partially blocked and/or the blower wheel was bad. When I took it apart, the vent had very little lint in the lower elbow exiting the back of the dryer but the blower wheel was loose on the shaft and was missing the clamp. I took off the front cover and checked the sensors which were all good. Then I removed the cover for the heating coil after finding that it appeared open. Found that the coil had in fact broken but the break was not visible just by looking in. Located the break in the coil within an insulator near the back. Through 15 years of vibration, the Cycling Thermostat evidently had degraded to the point where one electrical connection or more came loose and caused a short. There is also a possibility that the Bakelite section of the Dryer Cycling Thermostat body separated from the metal base, simultaneously exposing all four connections to a short. The thermostat literally exploded into chunks and dust. There was a heavy arcing and then, thankfully, the thermal fuse blew and shut down power to the short... Read more

Took off front cover of drier, removed old part and just snapped in new part. Read more

Ordered a new clip and installed it. Easy to do. Unplugged the dryer. Removed the front. It is only held on by two screws. Removed wires to the door switch. removed the female end (it had the broken male piece in it. Inserted the new female part in the front, clipped in the male part into the door and reconnected the door switch wires, screwed the front back on. Job done. Total time was less than 10 minutes. Did some dryer repair research (dryer not heating) on the internet. Bought an ohm meter, opened up the dryer and tested the cut-off-T, high limit thermostat, dryer igniter, flame sensor, cycling thermostat for continuity. The igniter was bad, the other parts tested ok. One day my wife went to bake something and the bake/broil buttons as well as #3, #9, and oven light ceased to work. Local repair guy came by and wanted to charge $500 to fix it....YEAH RIGHT!
