There are multiple uses for the 5/16-18 Hex Screw. It is often used with small gasoline-powered yard equipment such as lawn and garden machines. While hex screws such as these may be used in edgers and snowblowers, the most frequent use this screw is in yard tractors. This variety of screw is commonly used in attaching the various appendages of gas-powered equipment to a central operating platform. In particular, these hex screws are used to secure the engine block of power tools to the frame or housing of the equipment. Once in place, these fasteners have an almost unbreakable strength to them. This is so much so the case that often, in order to detach the engine manifold and repair the inner workings of an engine, the bolts must be chiseled or cut loose. In such cases, it is necessary for the bolts to be replaced during reassembly. Manufacturers insist that genuine OEM replacement parts be used in the rebuilding process. These replacement parts were manufactured to the same exacting specifications used to make the original screws. The shave plate is a common snowblower part that attaches to the back of the blower housing and directs snow into the auger and blade assembly so it can be cleared. The particular layer of ice and snow this blade is removing is the hardest and heaviest part of the snowfall. The shave plate is also called the scraper bar or scraper blade.
Periodically, because it is in direct contact with the concrete surface below the snow, the shave plate wears out and must be replaced. A shave plate may be worn, gouged, or sliced so it does not smoothly remove the snow from the sidewalk. Replacing the shave plate is a simple task that can be accomplished in 30 minutes or less. The shave plate is connected to the blower housing by four adjustable fasteners that are removed.

The fuel cap is responsible for securing the fuel in the fuel tank during operation so that it doesn't spill out. This is a dual cable fitting, designed to work with snowblowers. The cable fitting holds the auger cable in place, ensuring that it does not become a safety issue. The cable simply runs through the fitting, and the part holds it in place. Cable fittings are made from durable plastic and are not moving parts. However, they can suffer damage in several different ways. Plastic becomes brittle over time and through exposure to the elements, and the fitting may eventually crack and break. It is also possible to damage the fitting through contact with a hard surface while using the snowblower. Replacing a dual cable fitting is not difficult, although it will require a socket set. Locate the fitting on the handle of the snowblower and remove the mounting bolt(s). Remove the fitting and replace it with the new one. Be careful that the cables are properly routed inside the new fitting, then replace the mounting bolt(s). This is a genuine OEM part, and it is sold individually.
