Frigidaire Defrost Heater
Genuine Frigidaire part
By: Frigidaire
Part Number: 242044008

Replaces a failed defrost heater in the freezer section to clear frost from the evaporator coils. Restores normal airflow and temperature recovery when ice buildup causes warm spots, poor cooling, or fan noise from blades hitting frost.

What it does

  • Heats the evaporator during defrost to melt accumulated ice.
  • Helps prevent airflow blockages that lead to warm fridge temps.
  • Reduces heavy frost on coils and around the fan shroud.
  • Addresses symptoms like rapid frost return, ice-bound coils, or noisy fan contact.

What’s included
One defrost heater assembly.

Install notes

  • Unplug the refrigerator before servicing.
  • Access the evaporator cover in the freezer; carefully remove ice as needed to avoid damaging fins.
  • Note wire routing/terminal orientation; transfer to the new heater one-for-one.
  • After reassembly, run a test cycle and monitor temps once the unit completes a full defrost.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You The thermostat or defrost heater coil went bad.   Michalene W. • Beulaville , NC • April 16, 2019

I chose to replace both parts so I wouldn't have to go back into the freezer. I used only a screw driver, pliers and the gas lighter to heat the wire connector sleeves. I watched the available do it yourself videos and was done in less than 30 minutes. It has worked perfectly since. No more Ice build up in the freezer. I had no trouble finding the exact parts I needed on your website. Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Freezer was not cooling   Brian N. • Huntsville , AL • December 18, 2015

Got the six year old refrigerator from my daughter because of it freezing up but was in good ( Stainless Steel) shape to replace our 21 year old Kitchen Aid. The thermistor had been replaced as a cheap first step but didn't correct the problem as it totally froze over within five days. I decided to tear down again and check the defrost heater element which was found to have an open circuit and hence the replacement part. Thanks to AAP, I ordered the part at the weekend, was shipped on Monday... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Ice maker evaporator would not defrost causing a large build up of ice in the evaporator housing   Chris S. • Highland , CA • February 15, 2016

Replaced evaporator heater and housing. Just make sure you also replace the thermostat. If not it is a little challenging to get the wires out of the old thermostat/ heater plug into the new plug. Also if you have the same problem be prepared to have a good heat gun to melt the ice buildup around the evaporator and drain hole. Frigidaire Defrost Heater
Genuine Frigidaire part
By: Frigidaire
Part Number: 240356221

This defrost heater warms the evaporator coil during the automatic defrost cycle to melt frost and ice, restoring airflow and consistent temperatures. Replace a failed heater to stop recurring frost buildup and uneven cooling. What it does:

  • Heats the evaporator to clear frost/ice so air can circulate
  • Helps maintain stable refrigerator and freezer temperatures
  • Symptoms include heavy frost on the back freezer panel or coils, poor cooling, evaporator fan noise from ice contact, or frost returning soon after a manual defrost
What's included:
  • 1 defrost heater
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing
  • Remove freezer shelves and the rear interior panel to access the evaporator area
  • Transfer the heater into the original clips/brackets and route wiring exactly as original, away from sharp edges and the fan

Frigidaire Heater
Genuine Frigidaire part
By: Frigidaire
Part Number: 5304524953

This factory heater restores controlled heat in the appliance's heating or defrost circuit so cycles complete correctly and performance returns to normal. Replacing a failed heater helps resolve temperature-related issues and reduces extended run times. What it does:

  • Generates heat for the unit's designed function (wash/dry assist or defrost), depending on model
  • A failed element can cause no heat, extended cycles, or temperature-related error codes

  • Lead to frost/ice accumulation that doesn't melt during defrost (refrigeration)
  • Often tests open (no continuity) when defective
What's included:
  • 1 heater
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; turn off water supply if applicable
  • Access and mounting vary by model—refer to the product's service information
  • Note wire positions; make firm, original-style connections and avoid stressing terminals
