Kenmore / Sears Dishwasher Spray Arm & Related

I replaced the upper nozzle guide, nozzle shaft and upper spray arm. I also replaced the pump gasket for good measure. Top rack dishes had not been cleaning properly. I first removed the filter assembly to inspect the main pump from above. Replaced spray arms and tube. Found all had debris in them and prohibited water pressure from reaching items. After replacement everything comes out sparkling. Don't understand how the spray arms getting plugged. Almost like waste water is recycled. Although we had a service contract with Sears I elected to take a quick look to see what was wrong. There were 3 problems: 1 - retainer thumb screw had broken and appeared to have been damaged for some time showing scummy buildup along the line where the threads finally separated from the knob, 2 - after removing the lower spray arm, observed that the pump seal was visibly distended and exposed, and 3 - the 3rd level wash arm spinner disk was in the parts bag and the stainless steel sweat-fit... This is a 12 year old Kenmore, but my experience applies to many dishwashers. The machine had run for almost a year without being cleaned. I found parts had failed from age and water passages were jammed with hard-water deposits and pieces of food, labels, etc. that had gotten past the filters. There is a plastic "snapping" feature (Two plastic tabs that when pressed together can fit into the holes on the spray arm. Once in there, the tabs expands and keep the spray arm in place) that comes out of the top onto which the spray arm is attached to. That plastic piece broke and the spray arm fell off. It wasn't clear how the snapping feature was attached to the top of the dishwasher at first. I was looking for a replacement for it and could not find it on any of the assembly diagram... Read more

I initially just removed the spray arm and top cover of pump assembly inside the bottom of the washer. Removed match sticks, broken glass bits, a small metal ball, broken plastic fork. Thought problem would be solved, but no,and was disappointed the sound remained after reassembly and a test wash cycle. That basically left the circulation pump.
