For Whirlpool Control Board (Part Number: OEM18039438)

Dennis, Based on your post, the first thing to check is the thermal fuse WP3390719 located on the blower housing. It reacts to heat, and is a "one shot" fuse. If it "opens" the motor will not start and run. Also check for a broken belt Or faulty "belt switch" 279782 If the belt broke, the switch or wires failed, the motor won't start or run either. Also, you'll need to check and make sure the exhaust vent and vent hood are not restricted or clogged with lint.

Changed the electronic control board twice in response to dryer not going on. First time this fixed the problem for 6 months. Second time fixed the problem for a few hours. I now have the dryness level lrd on in the middle. The auto cycle Normal led is on as well as the Man Cycle Touch up led. The Temp Medium led is also on. Turning the power on and off or pressing the various buttons, or opening and closing the door have no effect on this described state. What is the problem with this dryer?

1 Answer

Richwrong, You may want to try this first, turn the power off, remove the top panel and access the main control board on the left side of the cabinet. Disconnect the P3 and P4 harnesses from the main control board (user interface/key pad harness) and reapply power to the dryer. If the LED's remain illuminated, you'd have a faulty control board WP8546219, you'll also need to check your power supply, Fluctuations and Polarity issues, can "scramble" a conttrol board chip. If you have a "PF" code but the LED's don't illuminate, you'd have a faulty "User Interface" WP8558753. Your Tech data information sheet, should be attached to the backside of the lower access panel, you can use it to circuit test the user interface circuits, if you have a multi meter.

Kate, A couple of checks to make. At the main control board check for 120 volts across P1 pin5(blk) and P1 pin 3(blu), with the door switch closed. If all's OK, you'll need to test the key pad / buttons resistance circuits with a your meter (page 6 of the tech data information sheet). There is voltage into the control board at all times, but no power out until the selection is made and the start button is pressed. (you'll find your tech data information attached to the inside of the lower access panel).

Brian for Model Number GEW9250PLO

Hello, I've been limping our dryer (Whirlpool Duet) along for about three weeks now since we found a puddle of water in the drum from condensation. I dried everything off and cleaned the lint out of the fan and surrounding areas. We've been having to turn the CB off for about a day then turn it back on to get the dryer to work. We would sometimes get two or three dryer cycles out of it before it would stop working again. Well that trick has stopped working now and all I get is the interior light to come on but the dryer will not turn on at all.. Any suggestions?

1 Answer

Brian, You want to start by checking the thermal fuse circuit located on the blower housing WP3392519. If the fuse opens, due to excessive heat, it eliminates power to the motor and the dryer won't start or run. But based on your post, you'll need to duisconnect the exhaust vent from the back of the dryer, and check and clean any debris in the exhaust vent pipe, and check the vent hood for damage or clogs. You may want to check the installation guide and make sure the total working length of the venting is not too long, as well. Condensation in a dryer drum is usually due to the venting system. Thanks

Control panel lights up, press start button, hear the click and nothing happens. I had a local repair person come out and he tested all the normal things, belt, fuses, etc. He says the motor works, the unit is getting power, belt is fine, etc. He feels that the problem must be the computerized part of the dryer, and this will be a costly repair. I am kind of handy, is this something I could repair myself using part # AP3775548? My husband and I are both public school teachers, with 4 children, so I try to save money anywhere I can! :o)

Hello Angela, I would definitely check the door switch. If you want to replace the control WP8546219, it isn't that difficult. Be sure to unplug the unit and remove the main top. The control board is mounted on the metal bracket across the top left of the unit directly under the main top.

Kcnormile for Model Number GEW9200LQ0

When my 10 year old Whirlpool Duet (GEW9200LQ0) stopped working I replaced both the thermistor and thermal fuse. I also thoroughly removed lint, etc. and checked the condition of the belt. Now when I try to start the dryer, I get a beep and the sensing light goes on, but that’s it. After performing the diagnostic, all the panel lights (all red except end of cycle is green) are on and I get an E3 code. Does it make sense to replace the control board next? Thanks.

1 Answer

Kcnormile, Are you sure you have an "E3" error code ? Did you by chance have a voltage problem or a power outage ? The initial description, would indicate an issue in the thermal fuse or the belt switch being "open" and not allowwing the motor to start, but the E3 code indicates a communication error between the controls. Check the thermal fuse and belt switch first.

Clint, Is your area suseptable to power outages or voltage surges ? A damaged relay is a good reason for a E3 code, software mismatch. Check and make sure the wiring from the control board through the thermal cut off and hi limit thermostat have not shorted to the chassis, check the heater element, casing and wires for arc marks or shorts to the chassis. Thanks
