Microwave Diode Or Rectifier

14 year old GE Profile microwave wouldn't heat, but had power. Read reviews here. Ordered triumvirate of magnetron, capacitor, & diode. Was hoping not to need the capacitor as this was an expensive part; and if not needed to return to AppliancePartsPros, which has been SOP. After dismounting the unit from its wall-hanging bracket, the most tedious part of the repair was removing over a dozen screws holding the cover in place from the top, bottom, and both sides. Fortunately, I had placed the unit on a bench that allowed me to slide the unit allowing access to the screws on the bottom edges of the unit. Replacing a magnetron in my particular 9-year-old microwave (a microwave/hood combination) was not a simple “plug & play” operation. That is why I am placing this in the slightly difficult area. First, it takes 2 people to remove the microwave from the top of the stove. Next the main outer panel need to be removed. Replaced the high voltage diode. You will need a special Torx screwdriver to remove the tamper resistant screws holding the cover. Once the cover is removed there should be a packet inside containing a schematic and detailed troubleshooting instructions. I used extreme caution to discharge the capacitor. The rest was simple. We had a problem with the magnetron a few years ago while it was still under warranty so they sent me a new magnetron but when the repairman showed up he had a new one also and said just keep it as a spare (no charge). It's an over-the-range microwave so taking it down takes a little bit of an effort, cumbersome more than anything. I went online to specifically check for resolution to problem. I found out the most common problem was a bad magnetron and diode. I then watched a couple youtube videos on the repair process. I entered model # of microwave at the Appliance Parts Pros website and was able to order exact parts. The APP site had excellent schematics for exact location of parts in microwave. After testing the power diode and capacitor that drives the magnetron power source, they came up good on the static tests with the multimeter and battery (used for the diode test). And the static test of the magnetron came fine too, ie: passed the ohm resistance test and short to case resistance tests. The rectifier (a high-voltage diode) connected to the magnetron that supplies the RF energy that does the heating in the microwave was shorted. The shorted rectifier was found by using a multimeter to measure resistance which should be very high in this type of diode.
