Since no known error code was on the display I figured it must be the control board. After getting through a fiasco with another website, I ordered the part from AppliancePartsPros.com. The control board is located under the freezer and comes out if you remove 1 self-tapping screw. There was no way to tell if the board was dead, but once we got the new one, we connected all the connectors, plugged in the fridge and viola! it worked again. Read more

Bought new optic control boards, both the emitter and the receiver. The repair process was so simple. The KitchenAid repair tech came out to diagnose our issue. He was only going to come back and install a new emitter. They wanted a lot of money to do the repair. They were going to charge us $257 just for the part (emitter board). The refrigerator was given to me and hasn't defrosted since it was new. I found the defrost timer had a burnt spot on the circuit board. After installing a new timer, the refrigerator would trip the circuit breaker in my house when it entered defrost mode. I found that the pink wire running from the control board all the way to the thermostat was shorted somewhere between the two parts, inside the refrigerator. I ran a new "pink" wire and all is good. Ordered this temperature control board, which was the correct part, but my original part was affixed to a frame with glue and attached to the control display via adhesive (taped to the control display face). Trying to remove the old control board was stretching and tearing the control display face so I was not able to install the replacement. No error on part of the company. First I took the technical data sheet off the back of the unit, it was in a brown envelop taped and tucked into the lower equipment cover. The 20 year old unit still serves us well, looks good and has been kept in good repair. The condenser fan had stopped so I removed, cleaned and oiled that motor. The decision was made to make an upgrade to the evaporator motor and control units so that the appliance could reasonably be expected to have extended service life. The guy from sears quoted 450 dollars to replace the control board. That's an huge amount of money to throw on a fridge that's is only 3 years old.
