Refrigerator Control Board
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP3-81329
This defrost timer controls when your refrigerator or freezer enters and exits the automatic defrost cycle to clear frost from the evaporator coils. Replacing a failed timer restores reliable defrosting to help maintain airflow, cooling performance, and stable temperatures.
- Advances on a timed schedule to initiate and end the defrost cycle
- Sends power to the defrost heater during defrost, then returns the system to cooling
- Helps prevent heavy frost buildup that restricts airflow and cooling
- Common symptoms of a bad timer: unit not defrosting or warming over time, heavy ice on the evaporator/cover, stuck running or stuck in defrost, or a timer that won't advance
What's included: 1 defrost timer Install notes:
- Disconnect power before servicing
- Access the timer (commonly in the control housing or machine compartment)
- Note/photograph wire positions and move leads one at a time to the new timer; mount securely
- Restore power and monitor for proper cycling; some models allow using the timer's advance slot to start a test defrost

Frost on the liner at the lower back and warm temp Catherine P. • Southampton , PA • August 05, 2014
Replaced the defrost timer. It was not located where the parts explode suggested in the thermostat control box which is located in the upper right corner of the liner. It was in fact outside the freezer compartment on the back lower left support (when looking at the back of the freezer). It is secured with 2 sheet metal screws with a 1/4 hex head. The manual override dial is visible through a punched hole in that support. Just remove the 2 screws, disconnect the electrical connector. Then...

Had error code sy ce. Robert G. • Rockwood , PA • October 16, 2019
I order both boards because everyone said one board did not fix the problem, until they ordered the other board because the new board does not communicate with new one. Well I replaced the board behind where the error was. That seemed to fix the problem. I never changed the main board under the fridge. So I would say try ordering the board behind where error code is. See if that fixes the problem before ordering both boards.

The refrigerator was operating in an unusual manner. The freezer would get abnormally cold even when set at the warmest temp on the dial. Then the refrigeration area was too warm. Greg T. • Boulder , MT • March 23, 2014
I took the bottom tray out of the freezer and found the coils iced up severely. I was reasonably sure the defrost timer was the problem and your tech said that was a good possibility. Ordered and replaced timer. (15 minutes) Problem fixed!!! Saved purchasing a new fridge at big bucks. We live over 40 miles from a service center so the cost of having a tech come out is astronomical. Thanks!!!

I don’t think I needed the capacitor and relay, but while I was at it I figured I would.
Originally we found we had an issue when water cane out of the ice maker. The freezer was hovering around freezing and the refrigerator was about 33 deg. I unplugged the refrigerator and it came back on and ran about a day. The next night, same thing. This time cycling power did not seem to help.
