There was a horrible screeching noise coming from the washer, and upon inspection I found that the retaining nut that attaches the cam to the machine was either improperly tightened to begin with or had worked itself loose causing the cam to wobble and the belt to work down the cam. Based on an internet search, the likely problem seemed to be a bad timer-control switch because it would hum and click but not advance on a 17-year old washer. Repairman diagnosed the problem as a bad lid-switch-assembly and replaced it - problem solved. Now I need to return the Timer-Control. Water became visible as it accumulated at the bottom rear part (the part that is tilted back) of the washer drum. I theorized that the valve controlling water flow into the machine was to blame.
