Dryer only runs on one setting or shuts off early? The timer controls drying cycles and heating. Takes about 15 minutes to replace with basic tools.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Bad dryer timer   Darlene T. • Fayetteville , AR • August 22, 2014

After calling Whirlpool customer support learned that a replacement timer would be $136. The CSR gave me the part number needed. Online I found AppliacePartsPros. I called and got a very personable CSR who took my order. I was assured the part was a genuine, new--not rebuilt--timer. My order was placed in minutes. Although I ordered standard shipping and my part arrived in 2 days!! Unfortunately Whirlpool had given me the wrong part number so I contacted AppliancePartsPros and reordered... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Amana bottom freezer refrigerator has cold freezer warm refrigerator   Albert I. • Rio Rancho , NM • June 23, 2014

A bit of research on the internet indicated the most likely problem was with the defrost system. I found the service manual for the refrigerator and was able to determine that the defrost heater and thermostat passed the self test. The refrigerator would perform a forced defrost which resulted in a cold refrigerator. More research revealed that this particular refrigerator does not have a defrost timer, instead the defrost cycle is controlled via the Electronic Control board which is also... Read more

Dryer won't shut off or timer won't advance? This control timer manages cycle duration and prevents continuous running. Moderate DIY repair.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Timer would not advance past the cool down cycle as a result dryer would not shut off unless you manually advanced the time dial or opened the dryer door   David F. • Carmel , IN • October 14, 2018

Replaced the timer - This should have been a VERY easy repair however, there is a clip (holding the timer to panel) on the bottom of timer than must be removed with a pair of pliers. There is absolutely NO room to access this clip so I had to take apart much of the dryer to gain access. What should have been a 15 minute repair turned into a frustrating hour. Read more

Based on symptoms it looked like the timer was not working. I did a web search to confirm this and found your web site. Entering the model number of the washer (Whirlpool) I found the timer and related information. This confirmed my diagnosis. I also looked at the video on how to change the timer. This was invaluable! Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Frost on the liner at the lower back and warm temp   Catherine P. • Southampton , PA • August 05, 2014

Replaced the defrost timer. It was not located where the parts explode suggested in the thermostat control box which is located in the upper right corner of the liner. It was in fact outside the freezer compartment on the back lower left support (when looking at the back of the freezer). It is secured with 2 sheet metal screws with a 1/4 hex head. The manual override dial is visible through a punched hole in that support. Just remove the 2 screws, disconnect the electrical connector. Then... Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You The refrigerator section was not staying cold as before and the noise was louder than normal   Stephen S. • Flagstaff , AZ • July 11, 2015

At first, I suspected the evaporator fan motor was going bad, but when I went in to check it out, I found the evaporator coils totally frozen up; the fan was cavitating. I defrosted the coils completely and checked everything out. By process of elimination the Defrost timer had to be the culprit. I unplugged the timer and sure enough, the motor winding was open. Part Number: 21001362

This timer is the electromechanical control that sequences wash/dry cycles and timed functions. It replaces a failed cycle timer so the appliance can advance through settings and control timed operations reliably. What it does:

  • Common symptom: appliance does not advance through cycles or stays on a single cycle
  • Common symptom: selector changes have no effect or certain functions do not receive power
What's included: One timer assembly. Install notes:
  • Disconnect power to the appliance before starting any repair to avoid shock
  • Handle electrical connectors gently and note wire locations or take a photo before disconnecting
