Wife let me know the microwave was making grinding noise while I was in garage fixing her car starter, never a dull moment. Further questioning she also said it wan't heating the food. Due to being an odd sized built in $$ unit I had to have repaired. I was getting quotes in the $4-500 range for just the magnetron. This is a 25 year old built-in over-the-range appliance. Only previous problem was 1 failed door switch (of 3 total), replaced 2 years ago. First checked all 3 door switches with continuity tester, all ok. Had advice to check thermostat switches, which were all supposedly NC (normally closed), used same tester. This damper was added to the outside vent duct line as an additional block against outside air intrusion. Well, after I accessed the place where the charcoal filter would be, I found out that there was NO CHARCOAL FILTER AT ALL! No wonder the circulating fan did not take cooking odors out of the room! I replaced the motor by removing 5 screws from the bottom of the microwave and 1 screws from the motor. Very easy to replace, I didn't even have to remove it from the wall (I unplugged it just in case). Read more
