Weird deal. Gas pressure had dropped due to low propane. This allowed the pressure at the regulator to drop below the set pressure, opening the regulator. A slight seepage past the valves must have allowed the smell. Propane tank was refilled and the gas smell disappeared. This was a simple fix. The igniters and valve I received, were a simple unplugging of the old igniters and plug in the new ones, (two wires). The valve removal and installing the new valve was just a matter of removing the faulty valve by unscrewing a nut which was attached to a gas line, Then installing the new valve by placing the valve in its place and tightening the nut.
