Kenmore / Sears Relay, Overload, Capacitor

I had a friend and a repair guy tell me it was the start relay that needed to be replaced, which was an easy fix. My friend said just to unplug the start relay, replace it with the new one, and it should be good. I've never tried to repair a fridge, and that was the easiest repair ever. I bought this relay switch and it works great. On the left side of the compressor there is a plastic cover you pry off with a screw driver. The relay switch had one wire plug on it. Just pull the wire off and the pull the relay switch off the compressor. Read more

8 y/o LG unit was not cooling or freezing. There was a clicking on the back side every 2-3 minutes. Used these 2 issues in a internet search and top 2 cited problems were dirty coils then bad PTC & OLP. Tool off the back panel, compressor was quie hot. Looked for obvious signs of mal-function, burned wires, etc. I found that the compressor controller(attached to the compressor) had an obvious burned-out spot. Took a chance that was the problem (it was); ordered all new OEM parts, including a new timer and run capacitor (a part that kicks in every time the compressor starts). First checked the power then took off the compresser connections cover looked for burnt wires or loose or disconnected wires they were none of those I then removed the wires from the starter an overload protector removed them checked both for contunuaty overload protector no contunuaty then I checked the 3 poles on the comp. for contunuaty they were ok then I checked each pole to ground on the com. to final check that the comp. was still good Read more

After smelling and seeing the smoke I was able to spot the defective parts. Where the run capacitor connects to the control-compressor is where it was burning. An appliance repairman came to diagnose the issue causing the burning smell and the reason the 17- year old Frigidaire freezer was not cooling. Replaced start relay and capacitor. Good news, repair successful. Bad news, parts supplied are not direct fit plug and play on my Frigidaire model. Supplied parts are larger than the original. Wire retaining clip needs to be modified to hold relay in position against compressor. Original Molex connector did not connect to the supplied relay. The smell was bad. Burnt wires but smelled like it could be a critter. Saw that the starter relay smoked after a cycle. Ordered the part.(sunday). Part recieved on Monday. I suspected the start-relay and tested it due to the lint plugged condenser coils. The start-relay rattled when shook, a telling sign it is no good due to over heating. I tested the compressor terminals and compared them the results with the Tech Data Sheet found with the unit, to find my compressor was still good. Research question lead to others that had the same issue. Consensus lead to a common repair. Compressor overload switch going bad. After ordering the correct parts, I changed out both the switch and the motor start capacitor just in case. After cleaning the equipment, I then put everything back together. Results were, clicking gone, seems to be quieter operation because of cleaning, more efficient cooling and nerves calmed. Read more
