Found replacing the switch to be doable, but it was quite a delicate operation. This was for a Thermador range with a broken downdraft switch. It required the removal of 5 small screws which could easily be fumbled and dropped down where it would be difficult, if not impossible to retrieve. Two of the screws were facing the back, so it was a blind operation to remove and replace the screws. Required an offset screwdriver, as space was tight. It provides clear marking for fan speeds, lighting controls, and other functions. Replace this overlay if the text has worn off, buttons are unclear, or if the overlay is peeling or damaged.
Pretty easy job for a DIYer. The control panel gets loose when the plastic tabs break for one reason or the other. You can replace the control board housing without having to replace the control board. Note also that the control board housing comes with a new control overlay label, so you don't need to buy the label like I did. Removed the brackets that sheltered the fan blade, removed the fan clip (was a little difficult but a needle nose plier was helpful), removed broken fan blade collar. Attached new fan blade and clip. Getting the new fan blade seated on the stem was difficult. I used a socket (so that the stem had room to move down onto the fan) and a rubber mallet on the socket to achieve a complete seating.
