I believe we had two problems. Our gasket was ripped in several places and our drain pan line was clogged. Therefore the water was frozen and backing up into the freezer. Replacing the gasket is an easy job and could possibly be done quickly enough that you don’t have to remove your freezer food items if you don’t discover additional problems during the process. First Problem - WATER INLET VALVE - After having problems with ice maker not making ice, I troubleshot and replaced the water inlet valve. Video and instructions were excellent. With 16 year old fridge, the water lines had compression fittings in the old valve, so had to cut the fittings off with a razor blade to allow the lines to insert into the new valve press-in type fittings. Some repair info background, while out shopping for a replacement oven ($1000 plus) a terrific salesman listened to the issue with my current oven and recalled his same issue and solution. Unplugged refrigerator and removed access panel from back of fridge. Have had this panel off many times for dust removal. Panel is a cheap piece of glorified cardboard on this Whirlpool model, which is a shame given that it was a $1000 refrigerator.
