After reading the reviews of others, I ordered and replaced the heating element, thermostat, cut-off & the moisture sensor bars. It was a success! The element was definitely bad on one end, the wire was burnt in two pieces. Now it doesn't take 3 hours to dry a load! Well worth the money I spent. Easy to fix & do it yourself. Checked and cleaned vent which was in need of cleaning, but not too bad (I do not consider this a primary causal detail, but can be a problem, so clean yours). Replaced Hi-Limit Thermostat (safety thermostat) after confirming the circuit was open with ohm meter. While I was in there, I completely cleaned the heater and ducting and internal workings of the dryer. First ran the built-in diagnostic tests. Got error code indicating that the inlet thermistor was open. Removed lower access panel and did continuity checks on the inlet thermistor, thermal cutoff and heating element. Even doing these checks is very difficult on this model due to the location of these parts and the limited access through the so-called access panel. I think I have a lemon of a dryer. I keep having to pay someone to replace my heating element about every year. So I already had the heating element, but I thought I would replace the thermostat and the limiter also. Yes, I am a 46 year old mom, and I replaced all three items. Thank goodness to youtube! Ha! I researched the issue on You tube and found out it could be either the "belt broke switch" or the Moisture sensor. A friend who was an appliance mechanic advised "since you have to take it all apart anyways, its best to replace the belt, spring, and Idler wheel" I bought the 5 item for $52. Replaced control board. Did not need Control Thermistor in my case, but I'm keeping it as backup. Got the Drum Belt just in case it breaks on me since the dryer is aging. To replace control board: Disconnect power and pull dryer away from wall. Take 2 black screws on the back off to remove the top lid. Remove 2 screws on top that hold the control interface on. This Maytag dryer was bought in 1985 if memory serves. It has worked hard with few repairs done by yours truly over the years.
