I broke two of the elements in my GE Profile cooktop because I failed miserably at removing the glass top. It pays to do your research, kiddies. All it takes is a Number 10 Torx bit to remove 12 screws holding the glass to the body of the appliance, and it lifts straight up. Diagnosed by local appliance shop as element. Didn't sound correct due to manner of failure. Also they were charging three times Whirlpool list for the part. Continuity checked element with ohm meter - ok. Replaced switch. Problem solved.
