Found the entire top bearing support plastic piece was completely worn through, the bearing slides had all disappeared some time ago. So it was obviously the problem. I used Fixya as an initial source describing my problem. I got two responses which were very helpful. One that the "coils" were probably the problem. I replaced the belt, belt tension pulley, both dryer drum roller axles and both drum support rollers. The selector knob and timer quit working on our GE dryer. We noticed the plastic selector knob was cracked inside when we pulled it off.
