General Electric Magnetron

Wife let me know the microwave was making grinding noise while I was in garage fixing her car starter, never a dull moment. Further questioning she also said it wan't heating the food. After some research, and based on the symptoms, consulted with repair person and figured it was the most common 3 parts (magnetron, capacitance, diode, and threw in a new fuse). So spent $190, and service tech came, replaced them, all good again. All done in an hour. Read more

I first removed the oven from the wall and then I removed the metal housing to access the internal parts. I discharged the capacitor using a pair of insulated needle nose pliers. Then I changed out the diode and the capacitor and reassembled the unit and tested it. It still did not heat so I disassembled the unit again and replaced the magnetron this time.... Read more

With the support of Appliance Parts Pros, I ordered 3 parts (plus glass stove top cleaner) that were suspected to be the cause of the problem for a total of $49.59. Easily replaced the Range Oven Sensor, $15.91, at the back of the interior oven & that was it! All oven features work fine & my wife set the oven for the clean cycle earlier today. So far, so good! Contacted a AppliancepartsPros tech. Told him what was wrong with my GE Microwave with range hood which is 24 years old. After trying to cook popcorn it made a buzzing noise and didn't heat food. Printed out and followed the online written instructions and referred to the video several times. For us, it was a two person job to safely support the front of the microwave while removing the two mounting bolts which go through the cabinet from above. After tilting the front down, lifting the back up and off of the wall bracket required both of us. Not overly heavy, just awkward. This was much easier than I expected. First and foremost discharge the capacitor, google has the instructions. The diagnosis was also easy, really just 3 parts, the Magnetron, the Capacitor, and the Diode. With a simple multimeter measuring the resistance I was able to determine the Magnetron had shorted out and the diode was bad. I replaced all three components which fixed my issue. Read more
