My refrigerator is 13 yrs old and began to build up frost in the ice cube shoot and the water tube began to freeze up over night. The flapper door was not closing completely. I simply removed the control panel by pulling up and out on the bottom edge, the edge is only about 1/8 inch thick, so don't reach in to far. I replaced all 4 suspension rods and springs and now it spins very smooth. They weren't broken, just badly worn. It gave new life to my 15 year old GE Profile washer. They are basically springs, so they wear after a while. It was well worth the hour I spent fixing it. You need a good long reach to get to the back 2 and you have to take off the dampening straps and the control panel so you can gain access. 1) Remove toe kick panel - 2 Philips head screws 2) Lay down on floor. This might be the hardest part of the repair from some people! 3) Remove broken spring, no tool required. 4) Using your fingers, slip one end of new spring into hole on lever arm. (If you're not sure how it should go, look at the spring on the other door, assuming you have a side-by-side.) 5) Hook the other end of the spring around a round-shank screwdriver. When I took it apart I found that the drive cup was cracked, the helix lock plate hole was reamed out and the ice deflector spring was broken. The biggest problem was the helix had slipped down the shaft and allowed the end of the shaft to bore a hole in the housing which made it a bear to get out. Others have had the same problem. I shopped around a bit - found one retailer that only had 1 shock in stock, another that only stocked the front shocks, etc. There is definitely a difference in the springs between the green colored and white colored shocks! I've torn this washer down before, so I'm fairly familiar with how it's put together. I literally could have done this job with a blindfold on! No kidding. Come on people! My grandmother could have done this one! Since the rubber gasket/skirt in the front of the washer (seals the door) was twisted when the spring failed and the drum failed, I had to remove the wire hoop and spring that held it in place and readjust the skirt. Downloaded the Technical Service Guide and followed the instructions for removal of the Door Closure Mechanism. Items the instructions failed to mention: 1. Although they took the trouble to call for removal of a 3/16" Allen head bolt, they referred to the closure mounting bolts as just "bolts". In fact, they were T-25 bolts. I researched the problem and found that normal wear and tear will cause the Damper shocks and the Suspension spring to fail. I decided to replace all Damper Shocks and the suspension Springs since I had the washer apart already. The Suspension Spring requires a lot of pull to get it in place correctly.
