I turned off power and unplugged the touch panel ribbon cable. After restoring power and closing the dishwasher, it started running a drain cycle--this suggested the issue was the touch panel. Replacing the panel was pretty simple. Remove 6 screws (need a torx) bit, unplug the ribbon cable, take off the control board and the handle, and then reattach the new touch panel. This is the front-facing control panel assembly that houses the touchpad buttons used to select wash cycles and options on the dishwasher door. It mounts to the outer door and connects to the electronic control board behind it.
