Symptoms: Machine was spinning and spitting a dark colored oil in a circular pattern on the floor under the machine. No strange noises, just messy. Researched issue, Gear-case bad, seal deteriorated and not preventing water from entering gear-case. I was actually getting an error code for the shifter and speed sensor. I ordered a shifter, which included the speed sensor, and replaced that part but the washer still didn't work. After doing some more research online, someone mentioned that the capacitor may be bad. After talking to my dad, who is an electrician, he said it sounded like my problem could very well be the capacitor. This was a tricky one to figure out. The Maytag Centennial MVWC400XW4 would fill and wash, then stop before spin cycle or would not complete the spin cycle. We had to manually move the dial to rinse & spin, etc. to get it to finish a load. This technique worked but it definitely became a pain to do and at the time we didn't notice how much longer the machine took calibrating a wash load. I had replaced the Agitator cams a couple of times already due to my brother-in-law overloading the machine which stripped the teeth off of the cams. I also noticed the agitator seemed to 'wobble' and made 'knocking' noises quite a bit. I reviewed the video on the Appliance Parts Pros web site, disassembled the agitator and cleaned everything up, which helped a little, but not enough. Prior to ordering parts I had pulled the pump strainer basket and cleaned it out. There was both soft and hard scale build up. The tub-to-pump hose was also pretty crusty/slimey. Still got warnings for SUDS and repeated F02 errors. Ordered parts and replaced the pump, tub-to-pump hose, interior drain hose and exterior drain hose (both hoses has some slime build up). I replaced the switch, the plunger, plunger guide and the lid cam, but the cam still didn't turn on the switch. Turned out someone had stood on the washer and bent the lid slightly, not enough to notice, but since I had ruled out just about everything else I started looking at the lid itself. I ended up bending it back close to it's original shape and now it works fine. I guess I learned a few things about washing machines though. Researched, then decided to try everything suggested. Cleaned the hidden filter under the washer, checked the lines and the water inlet valves, opened it up and found a hose rubbed thin because it wasn't clipped correctly during the manufacturing process. Replaced the inlet valve, pressure sensor and the thinned tube (all parts except the hose from appliance parts pros.com-had to get the hose at the car parts store). The start button had been tricky to use. You had to push it in just a certain way to get the dryer to start. Eventually it was non-responsive. All other controls worked and there was no error code displayed. The repair was to replace the whole control board which cost around $100. Heavy sigh.. Be sure to keep track of all your screws.
