Dryer Bearing Parts

I called an appliance repairman and he was booked for 2 weeks and I got the same response from a couple others. I had to YouTube on how to take apart my GE Dryer. It was confusing at times cause it did not match what the video showed. After taking apart the front I could tell the part that needed replacing was the top ring that the drum hung onto. I just wanted to put my experience here for all to see. I have a Maytag Neptune, MAH5500BWW, one of the original ones. I bought it back in 2002 and it has done many many loads of wash faithfully. So when the bearings started to get loud I thought it best to replace them, the seal kit and the belt. I did my research as best I could and decided to order the OEM parts from an appliance supplier. The dryer is a Kenmore Laundry Center, model 417-99570150. Bought in 1998, so it is an older model. Not wanting to buy the newer ones that are out now. We opted to fix the Kenmore. Just believe the older models are worth fixing, if at all possible. Frist we had to figure out what parts we would need and if the cost would be worth our time. After taking off the top and front panels to access the drum, it was easy to see what the problem was. The front drum support was worn through and the 3 drum support glides were gone. The rear drum bearing was also completely worn out. And while I had the dryer apart I also replaced the idler pulley and drive belt. The only hard part was putting the drive belt back on the motor shaft and idler pulley. The dryer is back to drying clothes like a new machine. Read more

After having replaced the drum support rollers twice in a roughly 3yr period, I realized something wasn't quite right, and indeed it wasn't. I had been ordering the wrong parts - I did use the online parts locator after checking, & double checking my model number. Replaced rear bearing, upper and lower felts, drive belt. Have repaired dryer before for same problem years ago, knew what to do, on line diagrams helped to move memory. Cleaned all accumulated lint out of machine.Belt was changed only out of age.Looked good but thought to be on safe side. Read more

My GE dryer from the late 80's/early 90's was squealing when it would start up, belt or bearing I was thinking. I found a manual online that covered my model and I watched a video on this site that showed me how to take it all apart, mine was a bit different but the principles were the same. I took it apart and added some quick-disconnects to 2 wires so next time I can take the front panel off easily. Replaced front drum roller wheels and rear drum bearing.Pull plug. Remove 2 screws holding top panel,slide rearward and lift panel off. Remove all screws from back panel,wiring cover and cord clamp. Remove back panel and feed cord through hole.No need to remove cord. Remove 2 screws from heater box and let it drop rearward.Remove belt from motor pulley and let tensioner rest against motor pulley.This step will trigger the switch that disables motor if belt breaks.The switch does not reset... Selected and ordered parts from online drawings. Watched videos showing how to make repair. Replaced worn parts with new ones. Suggested improvement: Videos didn't show my model (I know there are many models, showing all is probably not possible). In case of Felt the video showed a Maytag dryer when my model was GE.
