Ice maker not making ice or water leaking? A faulty water inlet valve often causes these issues. This DIY fix takes 5-15 minutes with basic tools.
After some research on the internet,I found out that the most likely cause was a failed water inlet valve. The refrigerator is quite old so I wasn't going to spend an arm and leg on it to fix it. Removed bottom cover, located leak at float switch, removed and replaced float switch kit. The toughest part of the repair was removing the Float & Retainer Assembly (in the interior of the machine tank) which broke when I pushed it back and pulled it straight up as suggested in the service manual. Replaced water valve to fix water not going to door, easy enough to do. Replaced icemaker which was corroded inside the cube-forming trays causing black flakes to come off stuck to the ice cubes, and was also leaking causing the water to drip into the ice bucket making one giant ice cube. I replaced the water solenoid assembly, defrosted the freezer and removed the ice buildup, used the exhaust of a vacuum to melt the remaining ice in the freezer defroster drain.
