Our 19 year old Whirlpool dryer quit heating. After checking the thermal fuse, I found the ignitor electrically open. I bought an ignitor at a local store as there was a national holiday the next day and I did not want the dryer inoperative waiting several days for shipping. I can say AppliancePartsPros is MUCH cheaper for the identical Whirlpool genuine part. • Takes too long to dry

Upon examination of the dryer, I noticed that the belt was intact, though a little worn and hard. However, I noticed that the belt had came of the idler pulley. So I put it back on and had the owners try it out on their next load of wash. It, once again failed to keep the drum turning. So I ordered a new belt and idler pulley (order # 8676164). The very easy diagnosis was motor seizure. Because the machine is about a decade old, I decided to renovate most of the guts. My DIY project included replacing the motor, blower, drum bearing, belt, and door hinge. The end result is a functional dryer with no left-over parts. Checked and cleaned vent which was in need of cleaning, but not too bad (I do not consider this a primary causal detail, but can be a problem, so clean yours). Replaced Hi-Limit Thermostat (safety thermostat) after confirming the circuit was open with ohm meter. While I was in there, I completely cleaned the heater and ducting and internal workings of the dryer. The full story: Dishwasher stopped running mid-cycle. When I first began troubleshooting I tried manually advancing the timer knob, and the machine would run. That led me to believe that the actual timer assembly was bad, so I replaced it. The dishwasher ran fine for a day, and then the same problem came back. The dryer is a Kenmore Laundry Center, model 417-99570150. Bought in 1998, so it is an older model. Not wanting to buy the newer ones that are out now. We opted to fix the Kenmore. Just believe the older models are worth fixing, if at all possible. Frist we had to figure out what parts we would need and if the cost would be worth our time. Looked at the diagnostic help on Appliance Parts Pros.com and the start switch was the problem, but only 25% of the time, so I was a little concerned it may be a different problem. The switch was reasonably priced, so I ordered it and it arrived in two days! It was very easy to follow the repair video, however, my GE Gas dryer had a lot of screws rather than 2 screws and tabs on the model in the video, so it took a little more time to open up. Background: Roper Electric Dryer model REX6634RQ0 purchased new in early 2006 by my wife. Dryer use profile is low to moderate as it was used by only one person (working from home) from 2006 to late 2007 then moved and stored in a dry basement until mid 2009. I think I have a lemon of a dryer. I keep having to pay someone to replace my heating element about every year. So I already had the heating element, but I thought I would replace the thermostat and the limiter also. Yes, I am a 46 year old mom, and I replaced all three items. Thank goodness to youtube! Ha! From reading "troubleshooting" sites on the internet, originally thought I'd be replacing the front & rear drum rollers, so I ordered the rollers, and a new belt before I opened up the dryer, taking it out of use. When I opened it up the front rollers were "shot", and the front bulkhead was "totaled". Waited for parts to arrive (within 2 days), and successfully replaced front & rear rollers, bulkhead, drum seal. The on-line videos really helped me ensure I was keeping in the right order. My... The timer knob simply pulls off the shaft with a solid, steady pull. Cleaned the timer cavity of lint/dust buildup. Aligned the keying flat of the shaft and knob and pushed the new knob on with careful, steady pressure until it was obviously seated. No tools required other than a vacuum. The door switch would sometimes not shut the dryer off when the door was opened. New switch came with new fast-on connectors. Replaced heating element and thermostat, took me about 2 hours but that's because i had to vacuum out the dryer inside and I also checked the fan before I closed the dryer back up. I have a Samsung DV448AAEP. Works great and saved my family money! Read more
