Defrost Heater, Icing Kit, Fountain Heater

This was a 2000 model so rather than just replace the defrost timer which was visibly burnt on the terminals, we just did everything. The cold control, defrost timer, thermostat, defrost heater and the compressor capacitor were all replaced. I had the same issue on my older unit and tore it apart replacing one item at a time over a three month period so on an older one i suggest do it all while it is apart. Read more

Total repair took slightly over 1 hour. Would have taken longer had I not already have taken the freezer apart on a previous occasion. Therefore I already knew the sequence and was able to disassemble it quickly. A little tricky getting the part out but easier to get it in. SImple repair for anyone mechanically inclined. Read more

Isolated the problem to extreme frost build up on the evaporator coils. I measured an open circuit on the defrost heater/thermostat, so I ordered both. Following the procedure in the GE service manual for this refrigerator, I gained access to the evaporator in the back of the freezer section, and I replaced the both heater element and the defrost thermostat. The cooling coils were iced-up. The ice was blocking air flow to the refrigerator. This resulted in the freezer working fine while the refrigerator was warm. Called AppliancePartsPros and talked to Sally. Sally was a big help in troubleshooting the problem. I ordered and replaced the cooling coil heater. If you attempt to do this repair yourself, BE CAREFUL, the cooling coil fins are sharp. Read more

I knew it was the heater element because I have replaced a few over the years. This was the first one I replaced on a french door fridge, It was very difficult because of everything I had to take apart to get to it at the heater. Overall it took me 5 hours. Inspected the Defrost timer and it seamed to be functioning properly. Ohm ed out the defrost heater element and it also measured out correctly (mine 34 ohms). Bypassed the heater element and found that the unit would run without tripping breaker during defrost cycle. At this point i inspected the wiring to the heater and checked continuity of the wire and continuity to ground, No issues found.
