Took the side cover off, noticed the chain brake assembly was damaged from the heat. Also after removing the clip securing the clutch drum I couldn't remove it. Had to use my biggest flat head screwdriver to force the drum off. The inner bearing was shot and the outer rim was worn with a lip on the bottom, reason it wouldn't come off the clutch. Because the parts were so worn out disassembly was difficult, but the new parts went on quickly. Soon I was back in business and the saw is working...

This is a genuine OEM clutch assembly sourced directly from the manufacturer; it is used in lawn mowers and lawn tractors to engage the blades. When the gear lever is pulled, the clutch engages. This causes the pulley wheel to spring out and tighten the blades against the turning drive shaft pulley, which then causes the blades to spin. If the clutch assembly is not working correctly, the blades will not move to cut the lawn. If the blades will not engage or if they are stuck and won't disengage, the clutch assembly should be replaced. This can occur if the clutch assembly overheats. Excessive use and normal wear and tear can also be the cause of a bad clutch. Before working on the clutch assembly, make sure the engine has had time to cool off to prevent burns.
