Limit Switch (Primary)
Genuine Whirlpool part
By: Whirlpool
Part Number: WP74004530

Primary limit switch that interrupts the heating circuit when temperatures exceed safe limits to prevent overheating. Replacing this switch restores the appliance's temperature safety control and helps return normal heating behavior. What it does:

  • Monitors temperature and breaks power to the heating element when the preset limit is reached.
  • Acts as a safety cutoff to help prevent overheating and related damage.
  • A failed-open switch commonly causes no heat or intermittent heating.
  • A failed-closed switch can allow excessive heat or repeated thermal trips.
What's included: One primary limit switch. Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing to avoid shock or injury.
  • Note terminal locations and wiring before removal; reconnect each wire to its original terminal.
  • Handle the part and terminals carefully to avoid damage; secure fasteners firmly but do not overtighten.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You The broiler in the upper oven of a maytag gemini did not work   Paul S. • Livonia , MI • March 06, 2015

I removed the oven back and I verified conductivity of the boiler element with an ohm meter. I then checked for a loose connection on the switch. The switch lead on one side was loose in the body of the switch. I replaced the limit switch and the broiler now works. Replacing the switch is simple but you may need to open the wire connecting lug as you want it to fit snugly but not force it on as this switch seems a little flimsy. Read more

Moisture Sensor Rods (Dryer)
Genuine Ge part
By: Ge
Part Number: WE1M575

These moisture sensor rods detect how damp the load is and signal the control, helping the dryer stop at the right time. Replacing worn or coated rods restores accurate Auto Dry performance and reduces damp loads or overdrying.

  • Measures moisture by sensing conductivity across the rods as clothes tumble
  • Sends feedback to the timer/control to adjust cycle length on Sensor/Auto Dry
  • Safe symptom matches: cycles end too soon or run too long, clothes remain damp, Auto Dry doesn't advance reliably
  • Residue from dryer sheets/fabric softener can insulate the rods and affect readings
What's included: Moisture sensor rods Install notes:
  • Disconnect power (and shut off gas supply for gas models) before servicing
  • Access the rods at the front bulkhead/lint filter housing; panel removal may be required on some models
  • Remove mounting fasteners, transfer wiring in the same orientation, and secure the new rods
  • Ensure the sensing surfaces are clean and unobstructed; test on an Auto Dry cycle
Care tip: If the rods are just coated with residue, cleaning them with rubbing alcohol can improve sensing. Replace if pitted, damaged, or if issues persist.

  • Helps with symptoms like unexpected shutdowns during operation or no power after overheating
  • Can be the cause when the unit only runs again after cooling down
  • Helps maintain safe operating temperatures around heat-sensitive parts
What's included: 1 fixed thermostat Installation notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; some appliances contain high-voltage components
  • Access location varies by model; note wire positions before removal and transfer one lead at a time
  • Reuse existing mounting hardware; ensure firm terminal connections and correct orientation

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Humming sound and burnt smell   Antonio F. • Miami , FL • June 08, 2018

I measured the resistance between the two connectors on the magnetron: should be close to zero ohms and it was. I measured between the same connectors and the metal case: should be mega ohms, it was 15k ohms. That is a bad, partly shorted unit. I also checked the resistance of the thermal cut off, which should be zero but was 10 ohms so I replaced. The HV diode is checked with a 9 V battery (YouTube checking microwave HV diode) and it too was bad. Make sure to take pictures as you disassemble... Read more

Microwave shuts off without beeping or won't power on? A failed thermostat often causes overheating shutdowns. This safety switch is moderately easy to replace.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You Microwave shut off without usual beep at end of cycle no power to unit even though plugged in.   James B. • Rocky Hill , NJ • November 17, 2017

Replace Thermostat on top of cavity. The thermostat is attached via 2 bending sheet metal tabs. Ours blew because the two wires connected to thermostat shorted, connectors melted. The short was caused by buildup of grease under thermal wire cover, shorting both leads. The unit is used heavily. This is the first thermostat to go. I had to replace wire connectors that connected to thermostat as well since the connectors were melted as well. Helpful hint. The grease build up was probably caused by... Read more
