Ge Defrost Thermostat
Genuine Ge part
By: Ge
Part Number: WR50X10006

This defrost thermostat monitors evaporator temperature and controls power to the defrost heater, helping prevent frost buildup and overheating. Replacing a failed thermostat restores proper automatic defrosting and more consistent refrigerator temperatures. What it does:

  • Monitors evaporator-coil temperature to control the defrost heater circuit
  • Terminates the defrost cycle when the coil warms to a safe temperature
  • Failure can cause heavy frost behind the freezer panel and poor cooling
  • May lead to longer-than-normal run times or a heater that won't energize
What's included:
  • 1 defrost thermostat
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power before servicing; access is typically behind the freezer's rear panel
  • Note wiring; transfer any existing mounting clip and clamp firmly to the same evaporator tube location
  • Avoid damaging fins or refrigerant tubing; route wires clear of the fan and heater
  • Thermostat must be cold to read closed continuity during testing
Also known as: defrost limit, defrost terminator, bi-metal thermostat.

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You The freezer was working but the refrigerator wasn't cooling   Steve H. • Hamilton , OH • October 10, 2016

The refrigerator is on top and freezer on the bottom. First I cleaned the access cover in the rear of the unit but this didn't fix the problem. I removed the ice maker and panel inside the freezer. The coil was frozen solid. I took off the defrost thermostat and check the continuity and it failed this test. After ordering the new part I installed it and put everything back together. It is now working perfectly. Read more

Do-It-Yourself Stories from Customers like You No lights in refrigerator   Lance B. • League City , TX • November 06, 2020

We bought a new house that has a 15 year old GE Monogram built in fridge. The home warranty people sent two guys out saying it was nearly impossible to repair the fridge and they both suggested buying a completely new freezer door for the fridge and of course the warranty company said it was preexisting and we weren't covered. Shocker. I have lighting in the freezer but not the fridge. I purchased a door switch and replaced the old one but that didn't do the trick. So i purchased a 2 amp fuse... Read more
