After researching the problem on this site, I realized that the most likely cause was a bad bearing contained in the shaft & tube assembly. Essentially, the tub seal failed & allowed water to travel down the shaft & into the housing containing the bearing. Ordered new valve assembly, part arrived 2-3 days, installed part same day it arrived. Some difficulty getting to the two screws holding it in due to small area to work. Once that was figured out, reinstall went very smoothly, total time about one hour. Probably saved a couple of hundred if I had to hire a plumber to fix it, plus the parts. This is a plastic selector knob that comes with a retaining clip, used on the washer's control panel to select cycle settings. It attaches to the control shaft and allows you to choose wash cycles and options. Replace this knob if it is cracked, broken, or if the clip has snapped, causing the knob to spin freely or fall off the shaft.
