I had never worked on a washing machine before but after watching the online videos I felt like I could do the repair. I was almost positive it was the Mode Shifter and Shaft Assembly that was bad. I could hear the bearing making a grinding noise when I turned the tub by hand. 18 year old Maytag Atlantis top load washer had a load knocking and rattle sound with excessive vibration when the tub was spinning, but not when it was agitating. They was no water leaking. The lid shut-off switch is located behind the lid How About That. I order the plastic ball the hold the lid in place plus the lid shut off switch. I watched the video that AppliancePartsPros.com has on how to replace the lid and the plastic balls. I removed the lid to get to the two philips head screws to remove that part of the shut-off switch. I took the new switch out of the package and compared it to the old switch. I ordered the parts, after assuring my diagnosis was correct from APP’s knowledgeable representative, and they were shipped quickly. I tipped the washer and disassembled the parts to be replaced and then installed a new clutch, clutch spring and mode shifter. Read more

I followed the very well made repair video for this particular part. The total time it took for the repair was under 20 minutes. But I have a suggestion for the repair video and that is to emphasize that when reinstalling boot. Have the tachnician point out that there are drain holes in the boot that need to be situated and reattached toward the bottom of the washer chassis. I found a video, by another parts vendor, that showed in detail how to dismantle and repair the washer. I wouldn't have known how to even get to the problem without that repair video. Dismantling the washer was easy once I knew how, but would have been like a (litteral) Chinese puzzle without the video. I had to cut the old agitator out with an oscillating saw in order to access the agitator drive. This is the second Maytag (MVWC 565) I have had to do this to. I first tried removing it by sliding straps under the agitator then then using a jack to pull it loose which did not work either time. One suggestion I have would be to remove debris from tub as you cut in order to prevent it from dropping from the inner tub into the outer tub. Read more
