Manufacturer Part Number: 22001821

The Agitator is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. It is the central component in the washing machine drum, responsible for moving the water and clothes around to ensure thorough cleaning. The agitator’s movement helps to release dirt and distribute detergent evenly throughout the load.

Causes of a bad Agitator include the wear and tear of daily use, the breakdown of its internal components like the gears or the agitator dogs, or overload of the machine that can stress the agitator.

Symptoms of a failing Agitator are:

  • Ineffective cleaning of clothes
  • Unusual noises during the wash cycle
  • The agitator moving loosely or not at all

This OEM Whirlpool part is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper and some Kenmore models.

Renae S. for Model Number maytag washer lat8606aae

The agitator my maytag washer lat8606aae has horrible smelling scum inside it. I assume the only way I can clean this would be to take the assembly out by removing the 1/4 hex bolt. Which direction removes the bolt- clockwise or counter? Would the bolt be rusty or frozen? Will any plastic parts be frozen on this 1997 model? Please bare in mind I would be in a whole lot of trouble with my mother if I broke or cracked anything! We all know what that means. Thanks in advance - Renae

Answer

Renae. You'll need to turn the screw counterclockwise, it usually takes 2 or 3 revolutions, to withdraw the screw enough to remove the agitator. You don't have to completely remove the screw. Grasp the bottom of the agitator and pull straight up. I think you'll find, that if you soak the assembly and parts in really hot, soapy water, then use a hose to rinse it off, you'll be a lot happier. Good Luck Thank you.
