By: Whirlpool

Manufacturer Part Number: W10721967

The Drive Clutch Kit is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool washing machines. As an integral transmission component, it includes the clutch that engages the drive motor to rotate the central agitator or impeller.

Causes of a bad clutch kit include worn parts that have aged from repeated use. Signs include slipping, grinding, or clicking noises from the transmission area.

Symptoms of a faulty clutch kit are:

  • The washer tub failing to turn or agitate clothes during wash cycles
  • Delayed starts or intermittent rotation
  • Vibration or shaking sensed from the frontloader or toploader

This OEM replacement is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Answer

Hello Clark, thank you for contacting APP, Most likely this issue is being caused by the Drive Clutch W10721967. If the Shift Actuator WPW10006355 is activating and you are hearing that loud click as it changes position it is most likely fine. One thing you can do is tilt the unit back, disconnect the shift actuator and manually move the cam loop that the shifter's "finger" was sitting in to spin and agitation positions. In spin position the tub and agitator will move together, in agitation the tub and agitator will move independently of each other. The age of the Gearcase W11454372 makes it unlikely to be the cause of the issue, but there is a chance that it has failed if you cannot get the agitator and basket to move independently of each other regardless of the clutch position, but I would recommend the Clutch first.
