Sandra, all the "proper" knobs for your cooktop are electro plated stainless steel, on a plastic based body(knob). They can become warped. discolored or "melt", when exposed to excessively high heat or excessive cook times. A couple of things to check, Are the gas flames from the burners the proper size and color(a blue flame with a distinct lighter blue color in the center), not a lot of yellow or white tips or streaks in the flame ? Are the bottom of the pans or pots 1 inch larger than the grate area ? ( oversized pots and pans can and will reflect the heat onto the cooktop surface and knobs. The part you referred to, is correct for your productWP74009554, and I believe you'll be more satisfied with the unit, if you review your owners manual, and replace the damaged burner knobs.
