Randy, sounds more like a timer issue WP206230. If the transmission was " locked up", the belts would burn. If the motor was damaged, it wouldn't spin. A bad timer contact, could cause the motor to hum and produce an odor. Based on your post description, you may want to start at the timer. Good Luck and Thanks
