By: Whirlpool
Part Number: OEM18040317
Manufacturer Part Number: WP8572767

This thermal limiter (89°C) is a one-time, temperature-sensitive safety device that opens the circuit if internal temperatures rise too high. Replacing a failed limiter helps protect the appliance from overheating and can restore normal operation. What it does:

  • Monitors temperature in the airflow/heating path and opens around 89°C to interrupt power when overheating occurs
  • Helps protect wiring, controls, and heater components from thermal damage
  • A blown/open limiter can cause: appliance won't start, no heat, or stops mid-cycle
  • Often indicates an underlying overheating issue that should be corrected
What's included:
  • 1 thermal limiter
Install notes:
  • Disconnect power (and gas supply if applicable) and allow the unit to cool before servicing
  • Access the limiter per the service information; note wire positions and transfer leads one at a time
  • Replace only with the correct rated limiter; never bypass this safety device
  • After installation, clear airflow restrictions and verify proper venting and heater/thermostat operation

Answer

Hello Jon, In this configuration, the unit should start, but cannot heat. In this case, if the unit will not start, you have either lost one leg of voltage, a bad door switch, a bad push-to-start switch, a bad set of contacts in the timer, or a bad winding in the motor. If the cutoff-tml opens, the heating circuit is open and the unit can run, but cannot heat.
