The Thermistor Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators and freezers. This component plays a role in monitoring and controlling the temperature within your appliance. A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance changes with temperature changes, allowing the refrigerator's control system to accurately maintain the desired cooling levels based on the readings it provides.

Causes of a bad thermistor can include wear and tear from constant use, exposure to extreme temperatures that can damage the component, or electrical issues such as short circuits.

Symptoms of a bad Thermistor Kit include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer is too cold or not cold enough
  • The appliance cycles on and off more frequently or for longer periods than normal
  • Unexplained changes in temperature settings

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Answer

PP, Your first checks need to be to the interior and shelves. First remove the crisper bins ands check for debris and wrappers on the bottom of the refrigerator compartment, especially the rear corners, if there is something blocking the slots in the floor, this disrupts the air flow and causes over cooling. Check and make sure the bottom of the door gaskets are clean and they close and seal across the lower mullion flange. Check and make sure there are no articles hanging over the sides or front of the shelves, or against the back and side walls, this also disrupts the air flow and "traps" air at the bottom of the compartment. Check the top shelf, make sure theres no large or bulky article in the center of the shelf, this will redirect the air away from the control panel and thermistor, it will also force the air down the back wall and cause freezing in the crispers.
