The Thermistor Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators and freezers. This component plays a role in monitoring and controlling the temperature within your appliance. A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance changes with temperature changes, allowing the refrigerator's control system to accurately maintain the desired cooling levels based on the readings it provides.

Causes of a bad thermistor can include wear and tear from constant use, exposure to extreme temperatures that can damage the component, or electrical issues such as short circuits.

Symptoms of a bad Thermistor Kit include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer is too cold or not cold enough
  • The appliance cycles on and off more frequently or for longer periods than normal
  • Unexplained changes in temperature settings

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Answer

Paul, The refrigerator thermistor is located inside the refrigerator light assembly in the ceiling. if you look closely you'll see the three "slots" molded into the frame. First remove power to the refrigerator, then remove the clear plastic light lense. Squeeze the tabs on each side of the light cover and pull the cover down to release it from the frame. Remove the light bulbs. Use a flat blade screwdriver to release the four tabs along the sides of the frame, insert the screwdriver into the long slots and pry out carefully. Then use a clean or taped putty knife or similar tool and carefully pry the front edge of the light assembly housing, this will release the the tabs holding the front of the housing to the ceiling. Disconnect the wire harness from the cabinet liner and lower the assembly. Cut the wires to the thermistor and unclip the thermistor from the frame. Splice the wires and make sure the connection is water tight and moisture resistant, attach the replacement thermistor to the frame and reverse the procedure and restore power to the refrigerator.
