Manufacturer Part Number: 12002355

The Thermistor Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators and freezers. This component plays a role in monitoring and controlling the temperature within your appliance. A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance changes with temperature changes, allowing the refrigerator's control system to accurately maintain the desired cooling levels based on the readings it provides.

Causes of a bad thermistor can include wear and tear from constant use, exposure to extreme temperatures that can damage the component, or electrical issues such as short circuits.

Symptoms of a bad Thermistor Kit include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer is too cold or not cold enough
  • The appliance cycles on and off more frequently or for longer periods than normal
  • Unexplained changes in temperature settings

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Gary M. for Model Number GSS30C6EYY03

Found refrigerator at 60° and ice melting in freezer. Temperature for freezer set at 0° and fresh food at 35° degrees. Compressor was not running. Cleaned dust from coils under refrigerator. Unplugged refrigerator and plugged back in and compressor started running and kept running dropping temperature in refrigerator to 18° and freezer to -6°. Compressor finally shut off and am concerned it runs too long. Found the thermistors under small covers on wall of freezer and refrigerator and would like to check them at control board to rule them out as problems but don't know which wires to check.

Answer

Hello Gary, The unit will have to run for quite some time to lower the temperature in the fresh food and freezer compartments to a satisfactory temperature since the load in the unit and the liners will have to come down to proper temperature also. I would suspect a bad relay on the main control board W11088499 considering the description of the failure. The thermistors will be fine since it ran until cool and shut down when properly cooled.
