Manufacturer Part Number: 12002355

The Thermistor Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool refrigerators and freezers. This component plays a role in monitoring and controlling the temperature within your appliance. A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance changes with temperature changes, allowing the refrigerator's control system to accurately maintain the desired cooling levels based on the readings it provides.

Causes of a bad thermistor can include wear and tear from constant use, exposure to extreme temperatures that can damage the component, or electrical issues such as short circuits.

Symptoms of a bad Thermistor Kit include:

  • The refrigerator or freezer is too cold or not cold enough
  • The appliance cycles on and off more frequently or for longer periods than normal
  • Unexplained changes in temperature settings

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Gene for Model Number AMANA - ABB2224DEW

I purchased this unit in 2005 and haven't had any problems so far. Currently freezer way is too cold. I lowered the electronic adjuster from 4 to 2 (7 is the coldest setting) but it is still too cold and seems to be getting colder (setting is having no effect). The refrigerator section is about normal but I'm checking the temperature as I type (45Degrees F) but I just turned it back on after cleaning the evaporator coils and fan blade. I need a hammer and chisel to get at my chocolate ice cream. LOL I guessing on my freezer temperature because my A/C thermometer only goes to 0 degrees F. It looks like -20F, my best guess (on setting 2 for the freezer, 7 being coldest). for the past 6 years we have not moved the settings from 4 for the refrigerator section and 4 for the freezer section. the refrigerator section has alway been a tad on the warm side for soft drinks as such. My first thought was the thermostat. I checked under the unit and it was full of dust, which we cleaned and cleaned the fan blades as well. Everything looks good. If it was the defrost circuit, shouldn't the freezer be getting warmer ? Thanks, Gene

Answer

Hello Gene. If the thermistor 12002355 is bad it will cause the unit not to cool properly. You will need to test the thermistor. Here is a chart to go by. Thermistor Temperature Resistance 77°F..................10,000 ohms 36°F..................29,500 ohms 0°F....................86,300 ohms You can test this with a multi-meter TJMA-DMT3. Here is a link on how to use a multi-meter. Hope this helps. http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/oven-repair-including-ranges-cooktops/4810-how-check-continuity-ohmmeter.html
