Kenmore Elite Side by Side Refrigerator, Dual Evaporator: Problem the fridge side evap freezes up (set at default temp 37degF) after only one month of manual defrost with hair-dryer; the freezer side works fine at set temp (0degF). Before ordering any parts from you, I need confirmation of which ones most likely causing this constant problem? There is no defrost heater in the on the fridge evap coil. I did notice two separate thermistors in fridge cabinet (#9 & #4 shown on refridge liner parts blowup). I also noticed wires (#12) on each side of air tower (#5), but do not know there function. Note the ice buildup only reached the evap fan once (made noise) and fan still functions. Would a bad thermistor cause this icing issue? If yes, which of two is suspected? How to test thermistor without cutting wire? Is there a troubleshooting process that can call up codes on front panel or at the control board? Any help you can provide is appreciated before parts ordered. Regards.

Answer

Hello Rawrestore, the most likely cause of the defrost problem is the evap thermistor is not making a tight connection to the evap coil tubing, this can be done by securing it with some zip ties (wire ties), and replacing the evap coil foamed insulation W11098695 which is likely already compromised or cracked, correct airflow thru the coils is critical for proper cooling and especially defrost. As far as testing the thermistors they are about 8.8K ohms when measured in an ice/water bath, this ref came with a Tech Sheet giving all test procedures and part values, it is located under/behind the front lower grille.
