Harvey for Model Number LAT8504AAE The transmission on our nearly thirty-year-old Maytag is knocking during the wash cycle. My recollection is that this was fixed about 15 years ago by adding transmission oil to the case - that is, the repair guy we had did this, and said it should be good for ten years. I didn't ask him how to do it at the time, and it's too late now... Does my memory sound plausible, and if so, is there a plug on the 'pointy part of the cone' that you can remove to put oil in? Also, what kind? Thanks.
Answer Hello Harvey, There is no reason to add additional oil to this type of transmission for a knocking noise, the noise indicates there are worn parts in the transmission that need to be replaced. Adding additional oil just dampens down the noise. The orbital type transmission was considered repairable without removing it from the washer. The moving parts in the transmission were accessible through the transmission's round front cover. There is no oil fill plug, the front cover has to be removed then resealed by applying a bead of silicone sealer under the cover to the case. The oil (34 FL oz) is part 6-0560800. Read More...
