Joe, Yes, the burning smell could be coming from the belt. You will want to check the pump to make sure that it turns freely and that there is nothing clogged in the pump assembly. Also if this is happening during the spin cycle then you will want to make sure that the brake is releasing. If this happens any time then the pump would be the most likely cause.
