How to Troubleshoot & Replace Ge AP3425457 / WH01X10106 Knob Clip

10 minutes and one screwdriver. 

II tried the GE website first, which kept guiding me to their toll free number to call a technician and make an appointment, which was very frustrating.. I needed the dryer timing knob ASAP, I didn't want to spend more than was necessary to replace this party. I received this part in 2 days, laligned the knob on the dryer and stem and it was done! 

I not only replaced the knob, but also replaced the timer too. This did it! 

I switched out knobs with a function that I rarely used and just ignored the problem for a couple of months. Then I looked up the repair and saw how minor it was. Ordered the part. It came in a couple of days. Made the repair in less than a minute. 

Replaced it 

Ordered new timer and the exact replacement came in two days. Video was helpful but timer replacement was slightly different. Timer was secured by tabs rather than screws - slightly lift the tab on the corner and rotate and it will come off. Also, at first glance there seemed to be two "C" terminals on the old timer, but as explained in the Q & A section, the two brown wires are both connected to a special lug that then plugs on to the new timer. Easy replacement just requires removing six screws on the rear panel. 

Found belt 'shavings' underneath motor as part of diagnosis process. Decided to replace both timer(1) and belt(2). Repair 1 was very simple. Most difficult part was removing the three screws holding the panel. Really it was my fault as I took the lazy man's was out by not pulling the machine away from the wall. I'm tall so I reached over the top. The swap was very simple. One screw releases the unit. Releasing the plastic clip holding the knob/dial took a couple of tries mostly because it is difficult the see in the tight space. Reassembly was easy with the new parts. Item 1 took 5-7 minutes tops. Repair 2 -- is tricky and works better with two people in my experience. Absolutely need the install tool and good, strong zip ties. On the first two tries, I used the small ones from my assortment. got 3/4 of the way around before 1 broke. For the third try, I used two of the long thick ones and that did the trick. I also had my son turn the drum from above while I turned the wheel and guided from the bottom. Considering the 'floating' nature of the tub and the tight quarters below, it would be quite a challenge for one person. Ran the washer through a cycle, vacuumed up the rubber residue and buttoned her up. Now, Mom is happy so, as the saying goes, everyone is happy! Repair 2 took maybe 15 - 20 minutes. Use heavy duty zip ties at the start and you'll shave that time.

Ordered parts, parts arrived ahead of schedule, took more time to gather tools than actual repair. Parts fit perfectly, dryer runs fine now. Saved $100.00 service call for $50 part.
