It's an unfortunate fact that part of the price of owning a KitchenAid Pro 600 is the cost and effort of occasionally replacing gears. This is at least the 2d time I've replaced the worm follower gear, and in fact the one I ordered this time was a replacement for one I had on hand, anticipating that I would need it again. In fact, I keep replacement parts for most of the gears in the transmission as well as some of the bearings. Fortunately APP doesn't charge too much for them, and the repair only takes an hour or so when you have the parts on hand.
As others have noted, the only specialized tool you need for this job is snap ring pliers.
