How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP6014184 / WP9781593 Inner Door Glass

This owner’s manual (Use and Care Guide) for my range says it’s for models: KGRT607 KGST307 KGRT600 KGST300 YKGRT607 YKGST307. The instructions to remove and replace the door are in the owner’s manual near the front in the Features section. But here’s and even easier way to remove the door. Open the door to the broil stop position (open about 4”). Grasp the sides of the door down near the hinges. Raise up on the door and then pull it away from the range. It comes right off. To clarify reinstalling the door -- Place the top of the door under the cooktop overhang. Line up the hinge plates with the slots. Apply pressure to the bottom of the door with the side of your leg so approximately the first 2 inches of the plates go into the cabinet. The plates will only go part way into the cabinet at this stage, you will still have 2-3 inches of the hinge plate showing. Now, tip the top of the door away from the cabinet to about the same angle as the 4” open broil position. Push on the bottom of the door to slide the hinge plates into the cabinet slots until they seat. How to replace the glass -- The main hint is that the disassembly is done from the front, once you remove the front glass from the door you can continue with the disassembly and work your way down to the broken glass. I recommend taking photos of the door as you proceed with disassembly. Mark some of the parts with a Sharpie pen (Left or Right, etc) as a reminder about how to reassemble. Lay the door on padded surface with exterior glass face up. Let hinges hang off the table. Remove the bottom trim that holds the exterior glass. Slide the glass down to release it from the tabs on the top edge, remove the glass. Remove remaining screws from the bottom of the door. Remove the side trim pieces. Remove two screws that hold the top of the door and the handle to the frame, remove that assembly. At the top of each hinge there’s a tab that fits in a slot in the frame. To keep the tab from coming out of the slot there’s a metal retainer and a clip screwed to the top of the hinge. Remove the screw and the retainer. Remove both hinges. Lift off the frame that covers the two sheets of interior glass. Between the middle layer glass and the layer closest to the oven there is another frame held by nine (?) screws and clips. As others have mentioned, these screws are difficult to loosen. I used an impact driver to remove these screws. When I reassembled the door I only tightened these screws to a normal firm tightness with a screwdriver. Replace the broken glass and reassemble the door by reversing steps. 

I followed a video on how to take the oven door off, and this model doesn't have the locking latches that are seen in later models. -Before starting, apply wide tape across the cracks and breaks in the glass, to keep it together. Be generous with this, but use minimal pressure when applying it. -Open the oven door, remove the two brackets above the hinges, then close the door and pull it up and out by twisting it left and right until the hinges pop out. -Put it hinge-side down on your workspace (I had the hinges hanging off the countertop) and remove the screws, then pull off the bottom and side pieces before removing the rest of the screws. -Pull off the front panel and glass piece, and set it somewhere safe. Pull off the large metal piece inside as one whole unit--note the position and orientation before removing it. Do not remove the two screws from this piece. -Pull off the middle glass piece, set it somewhere safe. Pull out the fabric insulation. - Unscrew the brackets. If they're stuck as hell and refuse to move, apply a lubricant like WD-40, let it sit and penetrate, then thoroughly clean out any WD-40 that remains on the screw heads, and use a screwdriver with a well-fitting bit and (if available) a T-grip to apply pressure while twisting. A mechanical screwdriver may work too, but be careful since it could also cause the head to get stripped. A loud popping sound is normal if the rear glass has never been removed before. - Remove the metal glass holder piece, and set it aside. Apply wide tape over the glass once more from this side, then lift it out and put it somewhere safe. Make sure the new glass has been cleaned of any packaging dust, then put it in place. - Clean the other glass pieces, front and back, before proceeding. - Reassemble in the same order as disassembly: --Put the metal glass holder back in place. --Screw the brackets back in. The notched, curved part goes down onto the metal glass holder, and the flatter tabs go up away from the frame. --Insert the fabric insulation again. --Insert the middle glass piece. --Insert the larger metal piece. --Place the front glass back on top --Put the side brackets into place, then the bottom bracket, and screw them back together. --With the hinges perpendicular to the oven door, put them back into place, and make sure they're all the way in and down. --Screw the hinge brackets back into place. 

Clean the inner door with fume free oven cleaner before removal. Rinse with clean wash rag. Remove door and set inside face down on table, with hinges hanging off table. Remove 4 of the 8 screws (the two at each inside face corner hold the hinges on)...remove the two upper corner screws, and the two towards the center. Remove lower and side trim (note the sides install BEHIND the front glass edge. Remove inner silver panel, noting the insulation's position around the glass frame. Remove third glass panel. Remove the 7 screws and clamps holding the inner glass/frame in place...set down with screws still in them so you don't flip the hold downs accidentally. Clean all 4 pieces of glass with dish soap and hot water, as you'll be eating and breathing chemical cleaners later.. Re-assemble in reverse order. The two inner glass pieces are the same size and interchangeable. The silver panel tucks under the bottom lip of the inner door to keep an air passage open. Put side pieces in place with tape you can remove later (4th hands). Replace outer glass, reinstall the bottom trim with the 4 screws, and remove tape holding the sides in place. Install door on oven and collect your brownie points! 

I removed two door hinge plates so I could remove the oven door. I removed the various outside frame pieces and the handle/vent assembly by removing the attaching screws. I removed the first inner glass panel. I removed the frame holding the broken glass panel by removing the attaching screws and brackets; those screws require significant force and a correctly-sized Philips driver. I replaced the broken glass panel and reassembled the door. 

I ordered the glass from Appliance Parts Pros, took the door apart with some online instruction from a previous online customer. The repair took about an hour. 

Remove oven door and kept a in mind how it was all going back together. I did take one picture and when I stumbled, the picture was great help. Now the only thing left is to bake something. I'll run the self clean tonight 

I ordered the glass and put it in myself! Well, must admit I got lots of help from AppliancePartsPros.com The video gave me confidence to give it a try. My oven door was different,so I was extremely grateful to have a customer rep walk me through the KitchenAId parts diagram late at night. Turned out I just needed to keep removing the layers until I got down to the bottom. I used WD-40 to get off the screws and clips holding the glass in place. Re-assembly took a few tries until I got the parts to drop into place properly. As a side benefit, my door is now clean and the glass is spotless. It was challenging for me mostly because I lost confidence. The phone rep got me going again and I did it! THANK YOU! 

Disassembly was rather staight forward. After being pleasantly surprised how easy it was to both locate the tempered glass online (diagrams where very helpful) I ordered and it arrived in only a couple days. I laid the oven door on a table....and ir was simple a matter of splitting the inner and outer shells to get at the glass. 

My husband disassembled the door, and replace the broken glass. We did NOT have to call the local appliance center for help. 

I spoke to KitchenAid and they sent me a parts diagram. I order the part from Appliance Parts Pros late on Monday and it was here on Thursday. Thankfully as we took it apart, we took some photos before dismantling and that helped a lot when we were putting it back together, for things like whether the side trim went on top of or underneath the bottom trim. The hardest thing we had was taking out the old piece of glass. The screws were so tight we couldn't get them loose. The stove is 14 years old so I'm sure they had been heated in place. We finally got the last one out and it was easy to put in the new piece. I cleaned the oven all up while the door was off and now with the new glass, I feel like I have a new stove. It looks terrific. If the screws would have come right out we would have completed this project in less than an hour.
