How to Troubleshoot & Replace Whirlpool AP4093621 / 74004053 Top Burner Spark Igniter

Self repair went great. 

I spoke to a Appliance Parts Pros rep after I googled troubleshooting. Appliance Parts Pros rep guided me to the correct part and gave me tips on repair. Success! 

On our Jenn Air, I simply removed the burner cartridge from the cooktop flipped it over. Remove the 6 or so sheet metal screws and then the 2 screws holding sparker in place, remove and replace sparker and all sheet metal and replace the cartridge in stovetop. In my case, although the ceramic insulator on the old part was cracked the new part wasn't the culprit, so I'm ordering a new spark control module :( 

I purchased replacement burners from my favorite folks - APP !! I have them in 48 hours - and changed them in 5 minutes. If you are unfamiliar with any repair - watch their videos. The APP folks are tops in my book !! Customer forever !!! 

Door gasket easy pull off and replace. Hinges on oven door required loosening of natural gas line in my case and pulling Jenn-air out of counter far enough to get to sides of unit. Removed cosmetic side panels and then old hinges. New hinges, only 2 screws through frame and hinge Replace cosmetic side panels, move Jenn-air back into counter an reconnect natural gas line. Note I used Teflon tape designed for natural gas on gas line connection. 

Replaced the spark igniter. 

Ordered the part. Waited about two weeks and part was a "no show". I checked on the tracking info which said it was delivered a week ago. Could not find it so I called Appliance Parts Pros. They sent a new one, free of charge. I have yet to install it. 

I listened to the videos and realized how easy the fixes would be. Order the parts; received them next day; and installed them in about 20 minutes. Was very easy to fix after watching the videos. Wasn't sure that the problem was the oven igniter but most likely it was AND IT WAS! If not I could have just returned the part for a full refund - nothing lost. I'm guessing I saved $100 - $150. 

Replace the 2 broken ones 

I researched the part number on the browser and found the part number for the igniter. I placed an order for the part. The part was about $17. I was charged over $6 for the delivery of the part. The part came on Thursday or Friday. I installed it, but it wouldn't work. The problem was that the wire was hooked over not enough distance, so I had to take a pair of needle-nose pliers and bend the wire closer to the spark supplier. After 7 attempts, I was able to get the wire close enough to the spark supplier so that the gas was ignited upon my turning on the switch. I am grateful that the part was available so I would not have to buy a new stove or seal off the burner. My wife and I are in the process of becoming resource parents (foster parents). We were told by the social worker that all burners must be able to ignite upon the time of the formal walk though inspection in order for us to be approved to serve as foster parents.
