I ordered a new thermostat and defrost timer. My brother came and changed out the parts and it seems to be working fine now. Unfortunately, the only tool I know he used was a screwdriver and it didn't take long to fix it. This was much more economical than buying a new refrigerator. He also replaced the water valve and that enabled the water to flow again.
